Meditation has been around for thousands of years and the benefits have been scientifically proven. It would be lovely to have plenty of time to meditate and to practice it daily, but some days even getting 5 minutes of peace and quiet is hard.
To meditate and attain mental peace, we must eliminate the hindrances caused by our distracted mind – The Way of Awakening – Geshe Yeshe Tobden
Here are just a few of the benefits of meditating regularly:
Less negative thoughts
Reduced patterns of fear
The ability to remain calm in stressful situations
The ability to release emotions that you no longer need
A better acceptance of yourself
If we examine ourselves, we will find that we always desire happiness, that we are never satisfied with the happiness we already process – The Way of Awakening – Geshe Yeshe Tobden
Meditation can also be called “mindfulness” which is an awareness of the present moment. When you are mindful in a stressful situation, then you will feel calmer and be reminded that this situation will pass, and you will be less judgmental. This creates a deeper sense of awareness and allows you not to take things so personally.
The world is blind, those who see are few, the mind is difficult to master and unstable, it goes where it will, it is good to master it, the mind mastered insures happiness – Buddha
Buddha said to the monks “When the mind is controlled, it must be like a stone of the four orients” although this stone lies in the middle of the courtyard, the rain falls upon it but does not destroy it, the sun heats it but does not melt it, the wind blows yet cannot lift it. A mind under control resembles this stone.”
Here are three quick mindful meditations to try:
- Take 8 deep breaths and hold each breath for a few seconds. This will give you more oxygen, which is positive, and expel carbon dioxide which will release negativity.
- Focus for 1 minute on nothing, yes that is right, just stare out into space and look at something that you like. This brings you into the present moment, it stops you from worrying about the past or the future, and brings you present to right now.
- Affirmations – say at least 1 positive affirmation three times. Here are some examples: I am happy, I love myself, and I am present. By saying at least one positive statement, it will change your mindset and reduce your anger, stress, and the need to control a situation.
